Virtual Assistant How To Get Hired and Keep Your Clients

Thursday, May 14th, 2009

Email is an amazing thing. You either get tons of trash or golden nuggets. Today was a golden nugget day.

Larry Brauner informed us of two extremely cool FREE resources for anyone looking for virtual assistant work. The beauty of being a VA online is, obviously, your ability to make money from the comfort of your own home business computer.

The two resources are:

o Virtually Successful – Simple ways for virtual assistants to find (and keep) clients by Cindy Greenway (168 pages) – all she asks for is your name and email.

o Becoming An Online Business Manager – Playing a bigger game with your clients (and yourself) by Tina Forsynth (236 pages) – again she is collecting names and emails, but hey it’s free :)

Larry came by these two gems via Kenya Halliburton’s Beyond Business Coaching website so thank you Kenya!

I know this has come up because I was recently asked for direction in helping a very good friend of mine find more virtual assistant work.

So don’t pass these up, go get your copies today. The pdfs are huge so do give them time to load. Then save them to your hard drive in a place you will remember.

Enjoy!

Comments Are Most Welcome (and a smart strategy for YOU). Please do leave your feedback.

Job Hunting Virtual Or Not Means Having Your Answers Ready

Wednesday, May 13th, 2009

Today was my son’s very first job interview. Actually you have to admire him, he hasn’t even officially graduated from high school yet (will June 4th). However, when the ad appeared in the local newspaper for video game testers you bet he (okay we) were all over it. What a great opportunity – and since he’s been playing video and PC games since the age of 3, 15 years of experience should count for quite a bit.

However, he has more going for him then just gaming. His communication skills – both oral and written – far outstrip many individuals two or three times his age (not bragging, just fact).

Okay Diane… So where’s this all leading? Well, while he was not at all nervous heading into, driving to, arriving at, or standing up and walking down the hall – nor was he nervous returning – very few people can be as calm as he displayed when it comes to that all-important interview.

So I went scouting and found typical interview questions and the best responses. If you’re getting ready or praying for that all important call, brushing up a bit on your interviewee skills is never a bad idea.

I might mention that the company he interviewed with, for summer jobs only, is a major game player (no pun intended) in its industry – Petroglyph. While he was lucky and already familiar with many of their products and/or games they have played a large part in creating, not everyone is so lucky. You may be shooting in the dark for “any old company” (especially in today’s economy).

So the following is critical…..

With the internet at your fingertips, take the time to see if the job you’re going to interview with has their own website. You can often gleam tons of very useful information – ahead of time – and form questions that you can ask when they get to that all important interview section called, “Okay so now it’s your turn, do you have any questions about us?”

No need to just sit there and shake your head. Have a small arsenal of questions ready (you may not have to nor need to cover them all), but the very fact that you’ve taken the time to research them means you are just that more meticulous then the person coming in next.

Commenting is a way to self promote, even if you are responding to the above. Take a few seconds and please leave your feedback! (Another smart move on your part!)

Being a Hacker Made Legal Yes You Can Get Paid To Be A Hacker

Friday, April 24th, 2009

I found the most extraordinary site this evening, totally legitimate, that actually trains you how to be a hacker but more “in reverse.” In fact, it’s all about IT Security.

I don’t know about you, but I’m a huge fan of the show NCIS. Computer forensics is fascinating to me, I just wish it had been around in my day (though it’s never too late in life to pursue your dream).

The website I discovered is EC-Council University, and it is absolutely amazing!

I’ve spent about an hour or more looking around with my focus on our son about to graduate from high school. He has a huge interest in all things computer, and this is one field that is not going down the tubes with the current economy. Unfortunately (for now) for us, you need to have a minimum bachelors degree to enroll (or at least that’s what I believe I am reading) to start taking their training and get accredited.

Your ultimate goal appears to be to fulfill the requirements to get a master’s degree (levels) in IT Security and Information Technology. You can accomplish this in under two years! Online – meaning you learn at your own pace, worldwide, anytime, anywhere. Yes, in the process, you literally become an “ethical hacker.”

Now more than ever, there is a call for computer specialists. But, until I explored their website I never contemplated the term “ethical hacker” before. Let’s face it, most of us think of hackers as the nefarious individuals out to cause wreck and ruin.

To be honest, I had to go put the search phrase “ethical hacking” into Google to get a clear definition. Wikipedia states:

White hat hackers, also known as “ethical hackers,” are computer security experts, who specialize in penetration testing, and other testing methodologies, to ensure that a company’s information systems are secure.

So yeah, I was right… in fact my reference above to NCIS was a good one. If you’ve watched the show (yes I know they are actors), they do amazing things with computers to track down the bad guys.

Training through the programs at EC-Council University can set you up to be that guy or gal in shining armor… the one that saves the day for corporate and government and even smaller businesses. Best of all, your skills (your role in IT security) would be in high demand!

Yes, a field still wide open for those willing to take the time and get the proper training! A paying field in high demand even in these tough times.

Honestly, to fully translate everything on their website would be impossible (and most likely illegal), so I’d like to give you one direct quote about getting training in IT security:

You will be able to access courses and resources using the Internet, anytime, anywhere. Download assignments, read and contribute to class discussions, review faculty feedback, and more at your convenience.

EC-Council University will provide you with an easy-to-navigate and rich volume of digital libraries and services. As a part of the Online learning system, you will be able to interact with other students enrolled in your courses so that you may share ideas, debate issues, and access messages left by your faculty. You will constantly be provided feedback on your progress by your faculty.

If you’ve been reading our blog for any length of time, or newly arrived, you’ll know we are always trying to find you the right “get paid to” programs, and what better way to get paid then to earn a respectable, useful, paying degree in a field that is never going away. The dinosaurs would have to return before IT is no longer needed.

So stop and rethink your priorities. Training is available to you, right now, online in:

o Security fundamentals
o Ethical hacking
o Penetration testing
o Computer forensics
o Disaster recovery
o Secure programming.

My ONLY regret is that my son could not start immediately (again he’s just graduating high school), but if you have struggling “kids back at home” or looking for retraining or a new job that has endless possibilities, be sure to visit their website for more information soon!
