1and1 Web Hosting Review
If you read my “Boy What a Week” and the updated version, you already know that I’ve spent the past oh two weeks now transitioning multiple wordpress blogs (with and without websites) to a new hosting service. This move has been a real eye opener in many ways. And, in all honesty, I can say that it was worth every long night and the sleep deprivation
The reason I’m bringing this up again is, of course, to let you know the answer to that burning question… “Am I happy I made the move?” The answer is a resounding, “Yes!” I’d also like to make a few suggestions that just might help you make the right selection when you go looking to change hosting or find hosting for the first time.
When you are selecting a place to host your domain there is much more to consider than just checking out the price.
You MUST make sure that:
1. You understand the features you will get or won’t (redundantly covered in the rest of this list)
2. Ensure that the company truly does back up their claim to customer support
3. Make sure you’ll have enough growing room in terms of storage, memory, the potential to add databases (or not)
4. What type of platform you will be most comfortable working with, and based on your choice of platform, what the interface (your “control panel”) will be (e.g., plesk, windows, cpanel)
5. Do you want to build your own web pages or do you want a “site builder?” And, if you are a beginner and opt for the site builder, is it going to allow you the options you are going to need once you are comfortable with the building process (e.g., access to the use of a remote ftp to get files up and down off your domain – a critical must have so you can offer your own free gifts or paid programs, products and/or services).
These are just some of the considerations – again beyond price – that will make a world of difference. You want to be happy with your choice because, frankly, moving can be (depending on the size of your web site or blog) a real chore.
Above all though, what you really need is a good support group in your corner! You need to know that at 4:00 in the morning, should it all hit the fan, a knowledgeable, friendly, and wide awake individual (or group of individuals) will answer the phone and help you out of any potential mess you may or may not have caused. Support tickets are fine (and you have that option), but sometimes nothing beats a phone call for immediate information and help!
1and1 is an excellent choice for simple (yet powerful) hosting and builds up, up, up from there!
Best of all, this company offers a wide range of features, options, and pricing. If you head to their site (just as example) you’ll see a complete “My Business Site” for just $9.99 a month – and you can try it out for FREE (nice!). I’ve seen packages starting at under $4/month, too. In my case, I needed a full out dedicated server (and got a great deal at just 1/3 the price I was paying somewhere else).
Shopping around is always a great idea. Also getting suggestions and recommendations before you take the plunge and commit yourself to any particular web hosting service is always a must!
I’m happy to say, with confidence, that while I changed from a 10+ year working experience in the cpanel environment (those just looking for hosting don’t freak, I’m just stating where I’m coming from) to Plesk and had to learn a whole new strategy in a hurry, I am totally thrilled with the folks at 1and1!

Hey Diane, Very interesting post you are by far more educated in the behind the scenes to the blogging as in the FTP and cpanels. I have a webmaster for all of those things for my blog only because I am not a techi and am frightened of messing with anything in the c-panel and anything that I don’t understand. But as far as Hosting Co’s I will agree with I want a co. that I can call at anytime of day or night and I do call a lot after midnight (I tend to be a night owl) for tech help, I handle business much better when doing one on one with a person on the phone. Like you said I don’t mind having to start a support ticket only when it is required which a couple of wks. ago when I had a Reported Attack Site I did have to do just that with my hosting co. HG. They have been great to me so far but it is good to know that you have one that you recommend with such conviction. Thanks for the info. and good luck with your new choice and move. jj
