Finding Telecommuting Jobs On Reputable Web Sites

Finding income, or sources of income, in these tough economic times is no mean feat. That’s why I’ve taken to scouting around for the best spots online (all free mine you) to give you your best shot at making cash from home.

At the moment, I’m only going to recommend a small handful because, frankly, most of these services are not what they appear to be and are a complete waste of your time (and mine). However, there is hope – and really good places to look – above and beyond the obvious (like Monster.com).

The ones I’ll be talking about off and on are not “submit your resume and hope for the best” web sites. These are boards and/or opportunities that, with the right skill set, just might land you a coveted telecommuting job (i.e., working from home for decent money).

Let’s start off with:

o Problogger Job Board – Current listings of available openings for bloggers and writers with legitimate companies actually seeking individuals willing to work from home.

Mind you, this is NOT a board that lists that crappy get rich junk you have to put up with in your inbox. Instead, you have the opportunity to prove your worth as a blogger and/or writer with reputable companies – and yes, get paid to do so.

o About.com Guide – If you are chosen as a “guide” at About, they pay a flat rate paycheck to you every month (and it’s really decent money I kid you not) in exchange for:

1) Passing their training course (you don’t get paid during this part of the process so do keep that in mind)

2) Four (4) article posts per month on the topic you pick and are chosen for (posted, of course, on your own About page)

3) 1-3 blog posts per week again on the topic you’ve selected.

They do get hundreds (probably more) of applications, however, filling out the application was fairly painless. They can take up to 8 weeks to get back to you, but they swear they will. And, last but not least, do have something ready – an article – on the topic you’ve chosen. You will add it into one of the boxes on the “application.”

They are not looking for resumes, just demonstrated experience in the area of your choice. Use your expert knowledge to help others and make money.

Here’s a small excerpt from the About.com Compensation page (then be sure to read the rest):

How Are Guides Paid?

In addition to a base payment (guaranteed to be $675 per month for Guides in their first two years, with a minimum of $500 per month afterwards), About.com pays Guides by measuring page view growth (month-over-month for Guides in their first year, and year-over-year every year after) with payment incentives for pageview growth. If your page views grow, you will never make less than $675 per month.

There’s more potential money earning on the horizon though if you’re one of the lucky ones chosen to become a Guide at About.com:

How Much Do Guides Typically Make?

On average, a Guide in his or her first two years will make $1,000 a month. The average Guide compensation is around $2,000 a month, and we have Guides who earn more than $100,000 a year.

Yes, the wait is lengthy while About reviews your submitted “application.” But there is nothing that says you can’t continue to look while they do their thing.

So… I also signed up over the weekend to another service that is suppose to send job opportunities of the telecommute/virtual assistant variety right to your inbox. This morning, the one I received was total crap. However, I did go out to their web site and am still in the process of trying to determine if it’s worth continuing with or not.

Do not use your primary account for these types of things, but DO have a good, solid secondary inbox that you will remember to check!

You can’t get that telecommuting job if you forget to go hunting for it or respond back when they write… right?

More people will be looking for these sites. I hope they don’t get scammed. It seems there is always someone looking to turn something good into a get rich quick scheme.

    Greetings Theresa,

This is good information — commonsense, really!

I recently bought one of those lists guaranteeing the purchaser could make $25.00/email. I paid $15.00, usually they’re anywhere up to $50.00.

It was supposed to be a .pdf file — it wasn’t.

It was also full of dead links.

So I edited it, added a few other sources to it (advertising programs, etc with my affiliate link) and thought: There’s no way I could sell this for $25.00.

I thought of $5.00, but even that didn’t sit well with me.

So, if there are any of you readers who would like it I’ll make the edited copy and the original available for free.

I think that’s all it’s worth, with a caveat to do their own due diligence.

Also, nobody should spend any money answering these listings UNLESS and UNTIL they are convinced that there’s some value in them.

If you agree any one who’s interested could contact you and you could redirect their email to me for action. I won’t use their email address for any other purpose.

Alternatively, I could give you a .zip file of the two files for you to distribute.

I wish you and your readers well.

    Andreas Krokene.

The ones I’m writing about truly appear reputable, but again that “due diligence” statement can never be over said :)

Funny I was looking at others yesterday and I believe the paylinkpal was one of them, thanks for the reminder!

  9. diane Says:

@Andreas, you should have an email from me directly. I’d love to take a look at your pdfs and offer them here on the blog :) Thanks!

@skywind thanks! Visited your blog…. do you do a translation on it? Not picking on you I promise but some of the sentence structure is very difficult to figure out. I do appreciate your visit and your commenting, thanks again!

Good article. It is important to get the facts and be skeptical in selecting online learning opportunities. So many of the pay slim-to-nil!

You are most welcome… me, too, if the truth be told. And it’s really not that hard to apply. However, it can be a bit of a wait to find out if you’re selected or not.

  16. diane Says:

Agreed. Freelancing is not for everyone, but it is out there as a source of additional income.

  17. diane Says:

I cannot overstress the one item no one should overlook – doing their own due diligence!

  18. diane Says:

Yeah, too much junk, not enough substance. But their ARE good companies out there!

Hi Margaret! Visited your blog to see what you’re up to and I like the nice clean layout. Keep making real comments on other people’s blogs for link building and investigate other methods of getting the word out about your blog and the ratings and rankings will come. My easiest advice is just respond to what it is you are reading (the current or past post) and make your comments on point and interesting. People like that :)
