Temptation May Start Your New Year Off On The Wrong Foot
With two major holidays behind us, and the New Year festivities upcoming, many will be making those often un-lived-up-to resolutions.
If you spend a lot of time sitting in your chair at your computer, and you’ve found your bottom (and various other body parts) spreading due to a lack of exercise, your options to get into shape for the New Year (and thus continue marketing in the best of health!) are many.
However, some people will be tempted to turn to quick solutions, and this post is a warning I found this morning in our home town Las Vegas Review Journal:
FDA warns against using 28 weight-loss products
“If you’re looking for a little help shedding extra pounds after the holidays, the government is warning you to stay away from nearly 30 weight-loss products that contain unlisted and possibly dangerous ingredients.
The pills are advertised as “natural” fat busters and have intriquing names such as Imelda Perfect Slim and Zhen de Shou. Some are touted as new versions of “ancient remedies” from Asia.”
Now while I cannot and do not advocate that the FDA gets everything right, the article goes on to explain that the FDA lab tested 28 dietary supplements “that could land unsuspecting users in the emergency room.”
Not where you want to be to start out your New Year, right?!
The problem appears to be that many of these products contain sibutramine, a chemical cousin and powerful appetite suppressant along the lines of amphetamines. Heart attacks, strokes, and heart palpitations are just some of the reported “side effects.”
Sibutramine is used to treat the extremely obese. However, these tested products were reported to have as much as three (3) times the prescribed dosage… 3 times!
We’re all for making solid, common sense, New Year’s resolutions. And more often than not, weight loss tops the list.
However, if you’d like to live through the coming new year as a healthy and active internet marketer, our advice is to take a look at this website FDA Warns Consumers About Tainted Weight Loss Pills.
Sad to say, a vast majority of these products are coming out of China. China seems to be having huge problems lately exporting healthy and safe items – from food, supplements, candy, toys, etc. – and now we can add this information to that growing list.
Start your New Year off right! And stay healthy! Scott and I want to see you returning again and again for many years to come; we’ve got tons of social media and internet marketing to share with you!
Happy New Year!

Hi Guys,
What a great article. You know that I advocate learning how to eat right in the first place, and avoid all of the dangerous products and the ‘weight loss’ foods that are full of corn syrup.
I see a trend coming in 2009. People are taking back their health and losing weight without all the gimmicks.
High time, don’t you think?
Thanks for spreading this important info.
Have a happy and safe new year!
Carole

Oh wow, thanks for that. I had been to my doctor to see about diet pills so I will look out for sibutramine and make sure to ask him about it. (Y)

@Carole – yep, I’m finding the age-old “count calories” to be working like a charm. Also makes one eat better since there are only so many calories to go around on any given day
@Barbara – thank you!
@LadyGrace – keeping in mind that sibutramine is for the (very!) obese, not a diet aid!
I’ve taken my fair share of diet pills, prescribed and OTC, but this year I think I’m going to stick to the Wii Fit.

Thank you for the information! While I’m not looking to lose weight, it is so important for people to know what they are putting into their bodies – and how disastrous it is when some people, companies, countries just don’t care what they do to you!
My 95 1/2 year young Pop always gets up from the dinner table feeling as though he ‘could’ eat more – that’s how he’s stayed thin and trim so long. I definitely don’t have his will-power and have tried a few ‘diet pill’s’ over the years, but found they made my heartbeat irregular
I think careful eating is the only way to go – and to make it a lifelong habit – not as easy as it sounds, but it’s the only thing which really seems to work.
Happy New Year!

When the weight gain is due to problems with diet and exercise then the solution is in the same place–no short cuts
The best thing you can do to shed the extra pounds is to do it naturally. Taking pills or going on crash diets is not only harmful, but you are more likely to put the weight back on. Eating healthy and exercising is the best thing you can do for your body and your mind.

@Diane: I’ve had great success with the “count calories” thing, though it’s hard to get into it. Come 2nd January I’m back to counting to get rid of the Xmas excess

I’m a firm believer that diet AND exercise are they only thing a person should do to stay in shape and be healthy.

@everyone – first a huge thanks for all the comments! Weight loss seems to be one of those things that hits a nerve
And, to date, strictly counting calories, I’ve lost 13 lbs since 10/30/08! Another 5 and I hit my target (with the thought that another 5 after that if I’m lucky). All this by birthday time, the end of February.
I know it’s that idea there’s a magic bullet out there that so many wish for… but it’s slow and steady, and healthy that wins the race!
Hey Diane,
This is some of the best New Years advice. We might not like to hear it, but eating healthy and exercise is the best advice!

It should be taken to action not to jump into quick solution as it may be dangerous.. So better to take extra careful on those kind of diet pills..

I am afraid of diet pills. Gotta lose weight the hard way.
i’ve taken diet pills once, when my doctor prescribed them because she said i had a metobolic problem that was causing me to not lose weight. however, now i’m doing it the natural way, albeit with a program, and though it’s not coming off as fast, i know it’s healthier.

It’s a shame that these products get away with calling themselves “natural”. It makes people suspect actual natural products in all kinds of categories.
I personally won’t buy consumable products from China- a massive pet food recall as well as baby formula were just a couple of the big issues in 2008. It’s easy to fall for these things due to the marketing hype, but you just need to stay informed. Thanks!

I don’t like to even try any of those weight loss pills or supplements. I’d rather go the eat healthy and exercise route. But thanks for the warning. It’s important for the word to get out.

Exercising seems essential, of course – I don’t know of anything that can replace that part in achieving and keeping a healthy body. Other than that I’m a fan of natural ways. Maybe one can skip a meal by drinking a cup of green tea while hunger strikes. Or simply eliminating wheat from one’s diet makes incredible difference!
Congrats on the weight loss, that’s terrific!
Thanks for the heads up on that ingredient as well.
Happy new year!
