How To Easily Find DoFollow Link Building And More
Last night while posting about a free PDF creator, I also noticed something unusual about some (not all) of our links here at Online Internet Marketing Strategies. What I noticed was while we have the “dofollow” and “commentluv” plugins on this WordPress blog, they don’t always work properly.
So I went searching for a surefire cure to what we perceive as a problem (we want to give everyone who does comment the benefit of commenting!).
I found… dofollow information that was easy to understand, assuming you’re comfortable with messing around with the php code of WordPress. It was a simple fix, though the file referenced in that link above did not exist, as named, in our current theme. However, by opening the file that “looked like it,” and doing a quick Edit/Find, I was able to quickly see the area of information that needed adjustment.
To be honest, I was a tad chicken to delete it, so I modified it. From the rel=nofollow, I changed it to “do” versus no. Strangely enough it appears to have done the trick.
But how to be 100% sure?
Well, I then headed to Firefox NoDoFollow. This particular link (shown) will allow you to first read what others have to say about this “addon” to your Firefox browser.
I then added the addon to my Firefox browser and gave it a test.
You’ll find after installing that it shows up under your TOOLS link at the top of your Firefox browser. Just click on it (you get a little checkmark showing it’s active), and visit any webpage on any website.
Blue – yes, the links are dofollow
Red – no, the links are not dofollow, they are nofollow (no link value)
It’s really easy to use, just click it on, click it off.
So, using the addon, when you’re marketing, reading blogs, commenting, etc., you’ll be able to see if your input also will have link building value.
That doesn’t mean you shouldn’t comment if you don’t get the follow through; sometimes it’s very valuable to have your say/input in forums, etc., without gaining a backlink for that input.
Remember, in addition to building links, your goal should be to build your credibility. Sometimes you’re lucky and get both a backlink and authority building. Sometimes just one or the other. Both parts, in terms of social and internet marketing, are important.
Enjoy your new free tool!
And for some last encouraging words, I’m including President-Elect Obama’s Saturday, December 6th address to the nation and the world. Sure does seem they have a real plan (thank God!). Also, while not everyone will be “building bridges” (for those out of work), the sheer act of bringing in construction and industry will help shore up existing businesses – activity brings money (offline or on!)

We shouldn’t have to remind you, but just in case… commenting is excellent free internet marketing for youself and your website! Please do comment!

Hi Diane,
I’ll have to give the add-on a try. Sounds good. Yes,I hope this nation can build some bridges both here and abroad…let’s get America back to work!
Barbaras last blog post..WOW…Another Award!
I use the NoDoFollow Firefox plugin all the time.
There is also another thirdparty plugin that I use as well for SEO – SearchStatus
It shows a lot of information for the page or website your are on including total indexed pages, backinks, alexa ranking, PageRank and much much more.
You can download it from here:
https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/321
@Barbara – I’m loving the addon
And yes, fingers crossed so tight I can hardly type LOL!
@Andy – thanks for the visit, and yes in our post about smart blog commenting, I mentioned we use SearchStatus, too. Comes in very handy when you combine all the right tools
Hope to see you again!
It is obvious that with every passing day the credibility of Alexa is only increasing and getting stronger. The mammoth number of users that is always increasing and the tough competition to the top is testimonial to this fact.
@All about jazz – in terms of credibility, I think each of these third party tracking and/or rating systems leave something to be desired. However, Alexa is one definite way to see if what you are doing is making a difference. As to accuracy or undue influence, I have no idea, but… and in terms of this post, finding the best spots to leave your mark (and doing it easily and for free) has to rank right up there with “smart marketing.”
I can read about this stuff all day long, thanks for the write up my friend!
