Finally Truth Will Out The Skinny On Page Rank
Yeah! While we tell people this day in and day out, there are still a few doubting Thomas’ out there that believe nothing tops a good PR ranking.
Yes seeing that little green bar means a lot to some, but we’ve also seen hundreds if not thousands of “stories” online. By stories, I mean as we visit sites with decent PRs, a check of their TRAFFIC stats often shows they are getting little if any visitors.
So what’s the big deal about PR anyway? Which would you prefer… a nice PR or thousands of visitors, search engine spiders, and rss feeders crawling all over your website and blog?
Sort of a rhetorical question isn’t it…
But, why take our word for it? Here’s a recent quote from none other than Matt Cutts of Google fame himself:
Cutts said, “I’m not sure I would say ranking is dead but it’s not as important as it used to be. The fact is the smart SEOs are not just necessarily looking at the rankings. They are looking at conversion, they are looking at their server log. It’s great if you’re ranking for a phrase but unless that leads to sales that doesn’t help you very much.”
“The challenge is not to pay so much attention to ranking, pay attention to traffic, pay attention to conversions and keep building good content and don’t worry about ‘can I show people that I rank number one for my trophy phrase.’”
(You can read the rest of the article here)
So what does this really mean to the rest of us? Just simply this… That even those at the top know you need to be in pursuit of traffic, and marketing and advertising on those higher trafficked sites, to help ensure a better return on your investment. Enough with the almighty PR already!
Strangely enough, I actually forwarded the above quote to a popular and growing service that pays bloggers to post. If I had the wherewithal, I’d send it to all of them.
The advantage for everyone if these types of services would post this information?
As an advertiser, you’d be better trained on how to spend your marketing dollars wisely; as a blogger with lots of traffic and that elusive PR, you’d be available to place those wonderful posts these advertisers are hoping for.
Let’s hope 2009 brings a reality check to the internet. When advertising, check traffic stats (keeping in mind they, too, are just guidelines), because, as we stated in our last post, I’d rather put my advertisement on any site getting traffic then spend all that money for one lonely little PR link.
Oh, and by the way… We do traffic! Click here for details!. And… here’s another highly recommended strategy!

Comments, opinions? We’d love to hear from you! And… it’s free marketing to boot for you!

What I got from the interview is that we have to be better at optimizing images, and putting up videos, and social networking, and buzz, and PR.
I’m wondering just how the personalization is going to affect niche marketers.
I’m afraid that search is moving towards big pockets. It’s only going to get more difficult. One person isn’t going to be able to compete in all these formats.

@Carole – we don’t believe you have to be a master of all things, just focus in on what you are exceptional at… and if you’re blogging most all of this is picked up naturally by the search engines, etc. It’s website builders who need to really dig deep and (perhaps) alter their perception of what “seo” really means. Thanks for stopping by, your how not to cook a turkey looks interesting LOL, I’m on my way to your blog
