When Did Spread The Wealth Become A Four Letter Word?
[This post carries the message to help you make more sales online AND is a political statement all wrapped into one. Please do hit the "read more" link!]
While I figure out a way to pull my how to make money online post together (writer’s block at the moment), it did occur to me that I do have something to say.
A while back we started a blog called Buy From Bloggers. It soon became apparent that adding a “Buy From Website Owners” also fits the bill. You’ll find banners for both types of sites when you visit the above link.
The idea behind that blog should be self evident. However, a quick summary might be in order.
The grassroots theme of the BuyFromBloggers blog is… Spread The Wealth!
The reason for the blog is very clear. When we are out online, more often than not, the “little guy’s” blog we’re visiting has something useful for sale. Bloggers and website owners worldwide have, hopefully, researched and found great products and services they use and recommend. And want you to buy through them.
Yet, I believe, it is still the case where the visitor will have a light bulb moment and then scurry off to buy that very same product from the corporation directly. Even though the person who gave you that “ah ha!” moment offers the ability for you to buy it at the same price, we overlook that fact and shop as if he or she doesn’t exist.
Spreading the wealth… such a simple message with such a powerful meaning! You need something, someone has that something, you buy it from that person not paying a dime more for it. You get what you want, the little guy makes his/her cut, and the corporation makes the sale.
Doesn’t get any simpler than that!
But there’s more to this. Since the birth of BuyFromBloggers (and website owners), everyone visiting thinks it’s a great idea. Some take the freely given banner – no strings attached – and post it. Some have even written about it.
Yet the other day, in the media (now we’re entering the political arena), I heard the words “spread the wealth” (with finger quotes held up as it was said) thrown out to the world by the Republican candidate for president as if “spread the wealth” was a four letter word!
What in heaven’s name is wrong with this picture? Even in the background, the people hearing this cheered. My mind reels at – dare I say it – the stupidity of those listening. I can only conclude that they were not listening and just blindly cheering away at whatever came out of his mouth.
Are we that stupid that we think that “spreading the wealth” is a bad thing???
I say it on the BuyFromBloggers blog and I’ll repeat it again here. The problem in this world isn’t that there isn’t enough money, the problem is one of distribution!
So let’s actively participate and put into action this grassroots idea. Grassroots movements can be, and usually are, huge in their impact.
Not only go grab yourself a Buy From Bloggers and/or Buy From Website Owners banner, but give a lot of thought before voting. Remember, it is the Republican party that believes you do NOT deserve a piece of the pie.
Act responsibly, vote responsibly.

It was greed that caused this financial crisis. I don’t live in the United States. Why didn’t anyone question what was going to happen when people got loans without divulging their incomes? Those selling the loans only cared about collecting their high, upfront fees. Where’s your wealth now?

Cheers! Great article! Could not of said it better! I already voted absentee and there are lots and lots of folks voting early. There’s a message coming and I believe it will be for spreading the wealth!

@Barbara & Maureen – great minds think alike
@Kaye – yes we should be asking ourselves that very question! Whatever happened to using our voices to be heard? Way back when (and I’m going back more than a few years) we were in the final stages to buying a home. The lenders held off the closing knowing the interest rate was going to go up. Well we did not close on the sale. Ended up in small claims court to get our downpayment back, but it was worth it. The reason why we did not buy was I fully trained myself to be able (without the aid of today’s online mortgage calculators) to determine we really could not afford to buy the house – not month to month! A long story just to say, if people would research more and act with caution things would be much different. Hence my insistence that people not swallow the “party line” and vote responsibly this year!

Okay, ladies, I’m putting in my two-cents-worth.
BTW, hello! With my new caregiving charges here now, I’ve had very little time to spend on the blogosphere, but I’m trying to at least stay abreast of what’s happening in the WHB community.
I my humble opinion, the concept of redistributing or sharing the wealth is being misunderstood here.
Certainly, as Diane has said, individuals choosing to purchase what they want or need from bloggers is a grand idea and will result in the various bloggers and corporations each being compensated accordingly.
But where the “redistribution of wealth” gets to be a “four-letter word,” is when our government begins to tax the snot out of both individuals and businesses (i.e., take the wealth) in order to fund some program that gives that wealth to deadbeats who refuse to get up and EARN it.
So, Diane, I would simply alter your statement slightly: It is the Republican party that believes you do NOT deserve a piece of the pie unless you actually WORK for it. Even then, there is nothing in our Constitution that guarantees that any amount of hard work will result in success. Therefore, if at first you don’t succeed, try again.
Please know that all of this is offered with a smile!

Oh but I disagree with you Brad. I have a cousin with Cystic Fibrosis. Since he has a preexisting condition, no one will cover him (and an extremely expensive preexisting condition too). He works. So what do we do about people like that?
Or what about the people who lose their job to no fault of their own and lose everything? Why shouldn’t they getting a helping hand?
I have no problem with a “redistrubtion on wealth” as long has people aren’t on it for years and years and years.

I think the point may have been that most of the people co-opting the catch phrase these days are, in fact, keeping the wealth to themselves.

I’m not going to say much because I’ve already had to hang up on an Obama supporter today and I’m not in a good mood. I have to agree with Brad. I work hard for my money and I don’t want to give it to people who sit on their butts and “expect” things to be handed to them.

To everyone above, and hopefully more to come, thank you! As for Buy From Bloggers – does that make me a socialist? LOLOL! Sorry, couldn’t resist that one.
@Lisa – in total agreement! We’re on Cobra at the moment, and I had to keep it (costs a small fortune) because we had some things that needed checking into so versus running the “sorry we won’t take you” we kept what we had.
October 30th, 2008 at 10:01 am
@Sadie – unless you read the other post, you’ll not see that Brad has actually had a change of heart (okay to what degree I do not know), but he acknowledged that what is being said is for the MIDDLE CLASS not the bums of the world LOL! Having choices, affordable choices, is what this world needs. That’s not socialist, not anything other than the “Golden Rule” in my book!
To all – please do visit the buyfrombloggers site and grab a 125 banner! Grassroots works
October 30th, 2008 at 5:18 pm
Buying local is important. As a small business owner, we fight the big guy everyday. People need to think who supports the little league and the local YMCA.
October 30th, 2008 at 7:04 pm
I think that part of the reason shoppers end up buying from the big corporation and not the blogger is that after they’ve found the product, they go searching for a coupon code to get it cheaper, and the blogger loses their affiliate income.

There are a lot of misconceptions when it comes to the “people who sit on their butts and “expect” things to be handed to them.”
There are a lot of things a person needs to do to collect welfare, and they are very strict if you don’t complete the task, looking for a job, going back to school, etc. There is also a 5 year lifetime limit that you can get state services.
If people want this level of government changed they need to start looking at their state representatives!

I don’t even know where to start I’m overwhelmed and thrilled at all comments!
@Priya – I think it’s doing that because of some breadcrumb thing in the theme itself. Sort of annoying especially since I usually make long titles LOL!
@Jennifer – I believe there is a huge difference in spreading MORE wealth to the already wealthy and helping out the middle class. It’s like the above post. If we bought from each other, for things we really want and/or need, that’s “spreading the wealth.” It doesn’t mean I’ll mortgage my home to buy something I don’t need or want. You’ve got to admit that the last eight years have been a dismal failure. I (almost) feel sorry for Bush going down in history as the worst president EVER (and that’s not me saying it, it will be so written). I’d be hiding out for the rest of my life LOL!
Thanks again everyone! All opinions welcome!
November 3rd, 2008 at 7:53 pm
I have to laugh when people think that spreading the wealth is wrong or even new in the US government. Let’s think about what recently happened when the government helped out the banks and big companies. Wasn’t that “spreading the wealth”?
What Obama means by spreading the wealth is that the rich and big business have to share the burden of paying taxes like everyone else does.
