Recap Rant And Everyday Heroes
Yesterday I promised you a truly eye-opening and heartwarming story for this post, but first my recap (rant) of what went down last night during the Vice Presidential debate. As we gathered our pizza boxes and drinks and settled down with an atmosphere not unlike the Super Bowl, here’s my conclusions:
First off, my understanding ever since grade school (no earlier, ever since the first time your parents asked you a direct question), you answer the question. Only kids and people with something to hide dodge a direct question. Frankly, even in marketing, it’s best to say, “I do not know, but I will find out the answer for you!” then to pretend you are either answering it or worse yet saying, “I don’t want to answer that question, instead I want to talk about…”
I wasn’t expecting rocket science from Palin, not after demonstrated proof that without a TelePrompTer she can’t string her own thoughts together. But to refuse to answer the question and then head off on some long dialogue about whatever is a sure sign of ignorance.
Prior to the debates, it is very obvious in what areas her party trained her. Not only did she fly around the country cramming like it was finals for college, but it was obvious to see that they pushed her to learn “pat non answers” should she be presented with a real question. And, sorry party, you did a horrible job. Having only two “stock answers” that never told us anything really brought the potential for this woman being in a high office way down the totem pole for me (and I hope you).
And, I hope you caught the Cheney-like way Palin pictures being Vice President. Although what she could possibly have in mind worse that what we’ve already been subjected to, god only knows.
One last thing, before my worthwhile story, that you need to keep in mind is she is Governor of Alaska. We all know we need ALTERNATIVE methods of energy. While she did give a glancing nod to natural gas, she emphasized several times being on the board of gas moguls in her state. Do you think she’ll vote against them? Hypothetically, let’s say a bill goes forward on solar and wind power. With proven statistics and a do-able plan. And it’s up against just digging around for more oil. One puts us only at a disadvantage should the sun stop rising or the wind stops blowing. The other is a limited resource that already costs us more than an arm and a leg. Which would you want her to vote for if it came to that in the Senate? Now, which do you think she will either vote for or be told to vote for?
When you don’t know too much about anything, and the internet is a proven playground as a demonstration of this power, don’t people generally go blindly along with what they are told?! It’s true! Do this, “Yes sir, yes madam!”
We don’t need this… Okay on to some really great, yet even scary, news.
In the September 29th issue of the Las Vegas Review Journal, a columnist, Jane Ann Morrison wrote the following commentary (I’m going to quote pieces versus replicating the entire article, but you can look it up online).
Her interview was with a Human Resource Director. Okay now, here are a few quotes taken in linear fashion:
I think these everyday people, the ones who are just trying to make ends meet and take care of their families, are the Everyday Heroes. I hate to see the resignation and fear when you have to break the news to someone that their job has been eliminated or that there just isn’t enough business to keep them working.”
There’s a bit of background about the HR person being interviewed. She works in a company of 400 employees. The HR person explained that prior to this year laying off or firing one or two people was pretty standard - per year. However, now they are doing this same thing every month!
Now here’s the really amazing part:
But in her company, several people came to her and said, “Lay me off. Let somebody else keep their job.”
Out of the 10 layoffs this year, one third were people who volunteered to save someone else’s job, she said.
“Lay me off. I don’t have kids. I’ll get by,” one worker told her, saving the job of a single parent with a child who was going to be laid off.
“I have had a supervisor tell me, “My team is my responsibility. Lay me off. It is my job to make sure my guys are OK.”
Women in the business office, hearing that one layoff was anticipated, went to the human resources director and volunteered to work fewer hours to in order to save the woman’s job. Even when informed they would lose their insurance benefits, they were still willing to take the hit; but then one of them got another job, so no one in that department was laid off.
The commentary goes on with a bit of background about the HR person. Coming from a small town, moving to Las Vegas 20 years ago, working 18 years in human resources. She states she knows everything about the people who work for the company. And she would… when someone gets married, has a baby, buys a house, there’s always HR paperwork. Financial woes and dipping into 401Ks, she’s privy to it all.
I’ve never see our economy affecting people like this before. And I’ve never seen people step up to the plate like this,” she said.
And here’s the clincher, also quoted:
In her opinion (and in mine [writes Morrison]) the true American heroes are those who are just trying to make ends meet despite a terrible economy, who put their families first, who sacrifice on a daily basis for the ones they love and have been doing it without our “financial experts” telling them they are in a crisis.”
“Hell, the only ones who didn’t seem to know we were in a financial crisis were the financial experts,” she said.
Is your job in danger of disappearing today, tomorrow, next week? Please, and this is just pure fact, the state we are in today is due to the longest 8 past years of our lives.
It is time for change. Again, stop thinking “party line” and think what’s best for America. The rich get richer and we are getting screwed.
Finally you have a team stepping up to the plate who addresses us - the middle class - and is more than willing to go to bat for us. I want people like that on my side, don’t you?!
Or, do we continue to head down the same old tired useless unworkable road. Just because the McCain ticket says they want change, when they cannot and will not demonstrate what, where, when and how, that worries me to no end.
Obama stands for a new way of life. Sure we’re not coming popping out the other side of today’s current fiasco in nanoseconds, but hell they are willing to put us on a road of prosperity and respect in the world.
Or, do we really believe that “mavericks” within the Republican party are possible. Pleeezzzeee! They will hold their party line and do what they are told to do. No change, no help for middle class (you can keep your lousy $5K one time health care, are you not even aware of what it COSTS to get decent health coverage?!?!).
Proof is in the above. People throwing themselves under the bus to help save each other.
For god’s sake’s American don’t throw us ALL under the bus, vote for the right team willing to take tough challenges (8 long years of sinking us deeper then we’ve ever been) and PULL US OUT of this mess!
For years, we (Scott and myself) have advocated sound plans, promoted and/or reviewed real methods for helping you make your business online prosper. We put our money where our mouth is and strive always to bring you the help and direction you need.
This is one on one people stuff - and we need a President willing to go one-on-one with us, the little guy, and speak up for us. WE are the people. WE need leadership and real direction. I personally prefer to live in the 21st century, not another long untenable 4 more years of the same current stone age.
