Peace of Mind For Those Software Downloads You Just Have To Have
This morning, catching up (I write that phrase a lot!), a new friend of ours over at blogcatalog has a post that caught my attention.
If you’re like us, getting good software is always a treat. However, more often than not, we are guilty of not reading the fine print as the thing is installing. I guess we just hope for the best, keep our fingers crossed, and go for it - especially if we really, really want to test it out.
But, there is that “agreement” you make as you install new stuff onto your precious computer. You know the one, “check here if you agree or click no to cancel.”
Hardly anyone reads it, right?
Well now there’s a way to put safety first, and do it painlessly
Thanks to EULAlyzer (and thanks to Nik’s Windowstips for bringing it to our attention), you can get their free download (EULAlyzer personal edition) that will do that tedious task for you before you install.
EULAlyzer can analyze license agreements in seconds, and provide a detailed listing of potentially interesting words and phrases. Discover if the software you’re about to install displays pop-up ads, transmits personally identifiable information, uses unique identifiers to track you, or much much more. - excerpt from the Javacool Software website
We’ve grabbed our copy to test out on the next what-have-you that catches our eye, so we cannot tell you 100% how it works, but it shouldn’t be that difficult to use. Most of these thing are like software installations themselves - just read along and do what’s needed to get it up and running.
Okay, in the back of our minds we do wonder who’s guarding the hen house
but if that were the case most of us wouldn’t be running firewalls and antivirus (which would be plain stupid!).
Javacool does have an excellent Google PR of 6/10 and an Alexa rank of 28,283 so you know it’s popular
Protect yourself and your computer, grab their free (or pro) version today!

I never thought about what the license agreement could have in it. I guess the developers could potentially put anything in there. I always just click through the screens as fast as I can so I can play with the software. Might be a good tool to have.

@Stephan you and me both lol! Actually as I read your response I started to laugh because it so sounds like me, too!
Thanks for coming by! I looked at your blog, it’s a really interesting layout

Brilliant idea! Talk about niche software - Javacool is meeting the needs of an increasingly larger segment of the internet community that actually considers before clicking install.

@Vince agreed, I am so lazy when it comes to reading the fine print, so anything that will make it a simple job and do it for me, hey I’m all for it LOL! Now to have some software to test it on. I also like the fact that there is the free personal use version!

You are right most of us probably don’t read the licence agreement before downloading. Thanks for the heads up on this new software that sounds like a really useful tool to use.

Interesting product. I wish there was one that could read my publishing contracts too….

@Capy - it pulls up words that it advises you rethink is sort of the overall gist
@rattitude - wouldn’t THAT be nice!
@Brad - hey, good to see you! Your garage conversion must be coming along to give you a bit of free time to visit

That’s a pretty interesting piece of software there, but I’m wondering if there is anything really worth KNOWING in them? I mean, I’ve been installing software for 15 years now, and nothing has ever came back to bite me on the rear, so to speak.

@Jules - LOL, me too in the installation department, but every once in a while I get something (usually for free) that I’m a bit leery about. Hey, if something will read the fine print for me, I’m all for it
