Is Your Social Networking Bombshelling? Let’s Clear Up A Few Issues
Written by diane on May 17, 2008 – 3:17 pm -I’ve said it before and I’ll say it again, I love my job!
Reading blogs is an amazing way to keep up with that worth keeping up with (say that 10 times fast), and today is no exception.
While over at BlogCatalog, I ended up twittering a bit (it has been a while, but I’m doing an experiment now).
Which lead me to today’s writeup. Discover Niche Social Networking by Katy Castro.
Katy makes several very fine points about using social media to market, and why you may or may not be seeing the “results” you were hoping for.
It all comes down to “where” and “how” you use your chosen spots. It also means versus choosing “many” to be “selective” when it comes to socializing in social communities.
Not much point socializing among gamers (unless you are heavily into gaming) if you’re ultimately also trying to interest them in what you’ve got.
It’s also not valuable to join so many that there is no way to work them all. Here’s a bit of background to give you a clue as to when you’ve got “too much” on your plate. Over 10 years ago the big thing was to join, join, join. At one point I started counting up all the stuff I had signed up for only to discover, honest to god, I was signed up for over 300 different “things.”
Yep, 300
So what were my odds of making money (or whatever my goal was back then)? I’m sure winning a State Lottery would have been easier.
The same goes nowadays with marketing. Join the few, well chosen, and work them from a mindset of being involved. As an example, I looked at several Twitters today where after setting them up, many never bothered to even make their first twit. What’s the point to that?
Join social networking communities where it makes sense that you be - that doesn’t mean joining nothing but “competitive” communities. Instead, strive for people of “like mind” and you’ll increase your odds for success. However, rushing in and bombarding your new friends with “advertising” will blow up in your face. You build relationships - or really don’t bother.
Again, Katy sums it up nicely, Discover Niche Social Networking, and is worth your time and effort today

Hi guys!
You are so right about too much to keep up with. Every day there’s 10 or 20 new recommendations. I’m trying to cut the fat myself. The only way to cut the clutter is to mercilessly start unsubscribing - but not from this list! I always read your emails
Thanks for more great info!
