Human Rights Awareness Day Focus On Amnesty International
Today, May 15th, is Human Rights Awareness day and bloggers across the world are uniting to bring situations and issues to light through their blogging.
We are no exception.
However, after pondering for days which travesty to write about, we decided to go a positive route and do our awareness part with our writeup of Amnesty International.
What or Who Is Amnesty International?
Amnesty International is a worldwide movement of people who campaign for internationally recognized human rights for all.
Amnesty International supporters are individuals outraged over human rights abuses yet inspired by hope for a better world. Supporters strive to improve human rights through campaigning and international solidarity. In fact, there are more than 2.2 million members and subscribers in more than 150 countries and regions! Justice on a wide range is their goal.
And since sometimes it’s just better to get a clear picture from the horses mouth, here is a bit of excerpt from their website:
“Working with and for individuals the world over, we campaign so that every person may enjoy all of the human rights enshrined in the Universal Declaration of Human Rights. We undertake research and take action aimed at preventing and ending grave abuses of these rights, demanding that all governments and other powerful entities respect the rule of law. It means we campaign globally and locally where ever we can make a difference. For example, we take action to:
* Stop violence against women
* Defend the rights and dignity of those trapped in poverty
* Abolish the death penalty
* Oppose torture and combat terror with justice
* Free prisoners of conscience
* Protect the rights of refugees and migrants
* Regulate the global arms tradeThousands of Amnesty International members respond to Urgent Action appeals on behalf of individuals at immediate risk. Publicity through the news media and the internet takes our message in many languages to millions of people.
Campaigning can change people’s lives - of victims and survivors of human rights abuses, of human rights activists and defenders and even of the abusers.”
Looking for a noble cause? Amnesty International makes it easy. You can search by human rights issues by region/country or by topic.
And, to all bloggers and readers of blogs world wide participating today, we salute you!
